Incoming Rain System Friday, January 31st, 2025

An incoming low-pressure system will bring much-needed precipitation to the state Friday morning through the afternoon and evening hours. Despite the amount of snowfall events throughout the month of January, they have not been providing enough moisture as the snow has been rather dry. As shown in the graphic below, much of the state has received between 10-75% of its monthly precipitation average. This is a growing concern as we enter the spring months because drought conditions can quickly return if we do not see a more active pattern throughout the month of February.

Additionally, as of the drought monitor update on January 28, 2025, much of southeastern Pennsylvania has been added to a D2 Severe Drought with portions of southwestern Pennsylvania under a D1 Moderate Drought.

Now, onto the forecast!

FREEZING RAIN COMPONENT:

Winter Weather Advisories have been issued for much of northeastern Pennsylvania for late tonight and into the early morning hours of Friday. Despite air temperatures warming above freezing, surfaces may lag behind and be susceptible to ice accretion. Be on alert for very slippery sidewalks, roads, and bridges. Bridges will be much colder than other roadways and may hold below freezing for an extended period of time. These hazardous conditions may impact the Friday morning commute.

FUTURE RADAR:

Precipitation will already be occurring by the morning commute, with some freezing rain across northeastern Pennsylvania. The heaviest and most widespread rainfall will generally occur between 12-6pm, with rain activity beginning to wane after sunset. As cold air comes in on the backside of the system, far northwestern Pennsylvania may changeover to snow with no accumulations currently expected.

PROJECTED RAINFALL AMOUNTS:

Overall, expect rainfall amounts between 0.25-1.00″, with the greatest amounts across southwestern Pennsylvania where those areas may benefit from additional upslope flow, allowing for more precipitation. Flooding should not be a large concern tomorrow, although low-lying areas may be susceptible to ponding of water.

If you are planning to be outside tomorrow, it would be good to bring rain gear and umbrellas as rain showers move through the state. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out!
